Pivot Arm Awning
Pivot arm awnings are among the most popular and most well-known types of awnings – especially when it comes to business-fronts and shops. One feature that has driven this popularity is that they provide shade from the sun or protection from rain while air can still circulate, since they pivot in a diagonal plane. This makes them excellent for use both with windows and outdoors. Their classic design also lends a beautiful aesthetic touch to any building. While their design is simple, this simplicity also makes them one of the most versatile and useable types of awning available.
How do they work?
Pivot arm awnings, as the name suggests, rely on pivot arms for their operation. These hinged (and sometimes telescopic) arms attach to the bottom rail of the awning, while the top resides in a covered top roll or reservoir. When the arm is fully extended downwards, it holds the awning closed flush against the window, wall, or opening. As the arm is pivoted upwards and outwards, the awning material is raised diagonally. Its length automatically adjusts as necessary so that it stays taught but is not damaged. Models with telescopic arms provide extended protection at various pitches.
What are they good for?
Pivot arm awnings are often the number one choice when maximum sun protection is desired, but continuous and ample airflow is also needed. When the sun is low, vertical type awnings must also be lowered all the way down to protect against the glare. As they are flush with windows, doors or openings, this greatly restricts or completely prevents the circulation of air. This is not the case with pivot arm awnings. While set to provide total sun protection, it’s diagonal nature still allows full circulation of air into your window, door or verandah through the sides.
In a true case of win-win, this design also proves advantageous during inclement weather. Never afraid of a little rain, Sydney residents are known to enjoy the outdoors even during a light downpour. A pivot arm awning protects you from actually getting wet, while allowing the refreshingly cool breeze in. In a similar fashion, this allows you to leave your windows open during a non-torrential downpour without having to worry about the interior of your home or business getting wet.
Yet another attractive feature of the pivot arm awning is its convertible nature. In addition to providing a full range of protection in terms of angle, when fully horizontal they can act as an overhead canopy. Pivot arm awnings are also an excellent choice for hard to reach or completely inaccessible windows. Our low-resistance pivot arms can be raised or lowered via internal cord lock, winch or motor no matter the distance between yourself and the awning.
