How to measure for your new shutters

Measuring for your new shutters is a simple, albeit extremely important, process. Accuracy is most important in ensuring your shutters fit perfectly. Our team of professionals share some of their insights so you have a better understanding of key elements in the new windows process.

For installation inside the window frame:

Step 1

Width: Measure the inside of the window frame in 3 places from left to right – at the top, in the middle and down the bottom, as shown. Record the smallest measurement. Height: Measure the inside of the window frame in 3 different places from top to bottom – on the right side, in the middle and on the left side, as shown. Record the smallest measurement

Step 2

Depth required: To ensure there is enough room for the shutters to operate freely. Keep things like shutter handles in mind – do you want handles sticking out further than the level of the wall?

Step 3

Diagonal: Measure from bottom left corner to the top right corner, then from the top left corner to the bottom right corner. If the measurements vary too much, your window is out of square. This may sound bad, we’ll make sure you don’t notice a thing.

For installation inside the window frame:

Width: Measure the exact width and height of the area you would like the shutters to cover. We recommend the shutters overlap the window by at least 50mm on each edge. If you have an architrave we recommend measuring from outside of architrave to outside of architrave.

Tip 1 If your window has an architrave, we measure from outside of architrave to outside of architrave for accurate results.

Is there a difference between curtains and blinds?

Indeed there is: curtains are fabric panels that are most often sold in pairs. You’ll find curtains in a wide range of widths, lengths, fabrics, colors, and patterns, making them a versatile and popular choice for every room of the home, even bathrooms and kitchens. While blinds lift up and down with a cord or lifting mechanism like shades do, they differ in that blinds are not a solid length of fabric.

What kind of material are curtains made from?

Typical decorator fabrics that are suitable for curtains include linens; silks and faux silks; cotton and cotton-blend chintz, which have a shiny coating; warp sateens, which are smooth and heavy; drapery antique satins with characteristic slabs; and brocades, with raised, tapestry-inspired motifs.
